Ascension Day

(29 May 2014, 14 May 2015)

The Collect:
Grant, we beseech you, Almighty God, that as we do believe your only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens; so we may also in heart and mind to there ascend, and with him continually dwell, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.

The Readings:
Daniel 7:13-14; Psalm 68:1-6; Acts 1:1-11; Luke 24:44-53

Forty days after his resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven.  Both Acts and Luke describe this event, and the Old Testament reading is a matching prophetic vision of Jesus (the Son of Man) being presented before the Father (the Ancient of Days) and receiving all power and dominion to rule.  Even the Psalm catches a glimpse of this moment in Jesus’ life, describing God as one “who rides upon the clouds.”  Noting the teachings of the past few Sundays about the resurrection life made possible by the Holy Spirit and the promises to that effect in Luke and Acts today, the Collect is a plea for God to help us remain united to Christ in his ascension so that we can, by the power of the Spirit, live and reign with Christ forever.
