Sts. Philip & James’ Day

 (1 May)

Collect:
O ALMIGHTY God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life; that, following the steps of your holy Apostles, Saint Philip and Saint James, we may steadfastly walk in the way that leads to eternal life; through the same your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Readings:
Proverbs 4:10-18; Psalm 25:1-9; James 1:1-12; John 14:1-14

Reflection:
Saints Philip and James are two of the lesser-known Apostles; the Gospel reading has one of Philip’s only lines in the Bible, and he asks Jesus to show them the Father, from which we receive the teaching that to see Jesus is to see the Father.  It is this insight of faith that the Collect and other readings go on to explore for us, particularly in the Old Testament and Psalm: that we would learn to know God’s way, the path of righteousness, instead of the way of the wicked.
